Bali’s municipal water is not treated to a drinkable standard, and stomach upsets from untreated water are one of the most common issues new families run into. Most households — local and expat — drink filtered or bottled water rather than water straight from the tap.
For babies and toddlers, use filtered or bottled water for drinking and for mixing formula, and consider it for brushing teeth until they reliably spit rather than swallow. Many families install an under-sink or whole-house filtration system; large refillable water gallons (“galon”) delivered to the house are also common and inexpensive.
Ice and washed salads at established family-friendly cafés are generally fine, as reputable venues use filtered water and commercial ice. When in doubt at smaller warungs, stick to bottled drinks and cooked food.
