Umalas
Umalas is the inland residential pocket between Kerobokan and Canggu — villas set among rice fields, very little through traffic, and no beach of its own.
It is one of the most common choices for families staying six months or longer, precisely because it is not a destination. There is no strip to be at the centre of, so streets stay quiet, and the villas tend to be larger and more garden-heavy for the money than equivalents closer to the coast. Parents with babies and young toddlers consistently rate the quiet above the beach access.
Practically, it is a short drive to Canggu, Seminyak and several international schools, and close to the larger supermarkets and clinics that cluster around Kerobokan. Most day-to-day errands do not require going anywhere busy, which is a meaningful difference in a place where twenty minutes of traffic can undo a nap schedule.
The absence of a beach is the honest limitation. Families here treat swimming as a pool activity and make the beach a deliberate outing rather than a daily habit. For households with children under three that is usually the right way round anyway; for a surf-obsessed nine-year-old it is a reason to look closer to the water.
