Nusa Lembongan

Its size is the appeal. The whole island can be crossed in a short ride, there is very little traffic, and children get a degree of freedom that is hard to find on Bali itself. The yellow suspension bridge across to Nusa Ceningan is a set-piece that most kids remember longer than the beaches.

The water is clear and the snorkelling is excellent, with mangrove channels on the north side that are calm enough for a first attempt. Currents in the strait between the islands are strong, however, and several of the most photographed spots — Devil's Tear among them — are dangerous cliff edges with no barriers. This is an island that rewards close supervision.

The fast boats from Sanur take around half an hour and can be rough; sitting at the back and taking motion-sickness precautions helps with children prone to it. Accommodation is small-scale, medical facilities are limited, and anything serious means a boat back to Bali — worth factoring in with very young children.
