Monkey bite vs Dog bite for families

Bali families run into two very different animal risks: a monkey bite near a temple, and a dog bite from a street dog near home. Both need the same urgent response, which is why it helps to know what to do right after a bite before it happens. The setting and the prevention tips are different enough to plan for separately.

Where it usually happensMonkey bites cluster at well-known monkey sites such as Ubud Monkey Forest, Uluwatu Temple and Sangeh Monkey Forest, where macaques are used to tourists and move close to people.Dog bites happen in more scattered spots: street dogs near beaches, village lanes, warungs and roadside areas, often close to wherever a family is staying.
Rabies riskMonkeys in Bali can carry rabies, so any monkey bite or scratch that breaks the skin is treated as a possible exposure needing rabies post-exposure treatment.Dogs are the main rabies carrier on the island, and a dog bite gets the same response: wound care plus rabies post-exposure treatment, started right away.
How the bite happensMost monkey bites start when a child is holding food, a drink, sunglasses or a bag, and the monkey grabs for it and bites or scratches in the process. Most dog bites happen when a dog is startled, guarding food or puppies, or cornered by a child who gets too close too fast.
Typical injuryMonkey bites and scratches usually land on the hands, arms or legs, from quick grab-and-release contact rather than a sustained bite.Dog bites can be deeper punctures or tears, and the severity depends heavily on the size and temperament of the dog.
Prevention for kidsKeep kids' hands empty around monkeys: no food, no dangling jewelry, no plastic bags, and no reaching toward a monkey or its babies.Teach kids never to approach, pet or feed a street dog they don't know, and to stay well clear of dogs that are eating, sleeping or guarding puppies.
Treatment and follow-upTreatment follows the same rabies post-exposure protocol as a dog bite, and sites such as Ubud Monkey Forest are close to clinics for follow-up (for example Ubud Medical Centre); at temples farther from town, plan where you would go before you visit. Both follow the same rabies post-exposure protocol; costs depend on the clinic, vaccines used and your insurance, check with the facility and your insurer rather than assuming parity, but a dog bite in a quieter area can mean a longer trip to reach a clinic.
