Lombok

Lombok is Bali's quieter neighbour to the east, about two hours by fast boat or a short flight away: wide empty beaches, green rice terraces and Mount Rinjani rising over the island.

The pace is the draw. Roads are emptier, beaches are less crowded and day-to-day life feels closer to the Bali of twenty years ago. Most families base themselves in one of three places: Senggigi on the calmer west coast, with its resorts and sunset views; Kuta Lombok in the south, around Mandalika, with surf beaches and a growing café scene; or the car-free Gili Islands just off the northwest coast.

The south coast has some of the most beautiful bays in Indonesia, and several have gentle, sandy breaks where children can learn to surf. Other beaches have strong currents and steep drop-offs, so it is worth asking locally before swimming, and keeping to the calmer bays with little ones. Lombok is mostly Muslim and Sasak in culture, which shapes the rhythm of the day and the dress code in villages.

Getting there from Bali means a fast boat from Padang Bai or Serangan, which can be rough, or a flight of around half an hour to Lombok International Airport near Praya. The main hospitals are in Mataram, so families with very young children usually stay within reach of the west coast or the south. International schools and family services are fewer than in Bali, but growing, especially around Kuta and Mataram.
